August and January Graduates Action Items

This following information was emailed to August 2017 and January 2018 students on March 2, 2018.

This page is designed to guide August 2017 and January 2018 degree recipients who are choosing to participate in the May 2018 Commencement Ceremonies through all necessary Action Items. (Please note, if you have previously participated in May ceremonies [walked] for the same degree, you are ineligible to participate again.)

If you do not recall your insideND password for entry into the Graduation Application, please supply OIT Help Desk (574-631-8111) with your name, netID, ndID, Date of Birth, and your Registrar listed address or phone number. If you are within the area, you must go to the Help Desk in person.

Prior to graduation:


Attend the Graduation Fair
March 20 at 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Everything you need for graduation...all in one place!

  • Purchase or rent your cap and gown*
  • Order graduation announcements
  • Have a graduation portrait taken
  • Have your gown pressed for the big day
  • Senior Week information
  • Learn how the Notre Dame family lives on after graduation
  • Guest with special needs? We will have information for you
  • Visit the Office of the Registrar representatives

Booths from the Alumni Association, Senior Legacy, Senior Week, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, and more will answer questions and provide crucial information. Vendors for regalia, class rings, photography, and others will also be on hand to ensure a successful graduation experience.  The Office of the Registrar staff will be available for your graduation questions.

After the ceremony – you can keep your cap and gown or donate it in recycling bins which will be located around campus.  Donated gowns will be recycled into furniture and carpet.

*We understand that many of you will not be able to attend the Grad Fair. If you are not able to attend, check back here on March 21 for ordering information.


Cap and Gown

  • Bachelor Set (gown, cap, tassel) - $35.00 - ORDER
  • Master Set (gown, hood, cap, tassel) - $65.00 - ORDER
  • Doctoral gown rental (gown, hood, tam, souvenir tassel) - $128.00 - ORDER
  • Graduating from Notre Dame - priceless!!

Payments accepted - all major credit/debit cards, student accounts, cash.

Undergraduate and Master's Gowns

Purchase your cap and gown at the Graduation Fair on March 20 at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore from 9 a.m.  – 7 p.m.  Assistance will be available if you are unsure of your size.  You will be able to purchase and take your cap and gown with you on that day.

If you are not able to attend the Grad Fair, please check back here on March 21 for information on ordering your gown.

The tassel and mortar board are yours to keep.  (Master degree candidates also keep hoods.) 

Doctoral Rental Gowns

You may order your regalia at the bookstore during the Graduation Fair. If you are not able to attend, ordering information will be available on March 21 (ORDER). Orders must be placed by Friday, April 27. Late fees will be assessed after that date and there will be limited availability.

Student doctoral purchases should be directed to Trish Aschenbrenner at supplies@nd.edu or by calling 574-631-1399. Price is $999.00 + tax, and includes the gown, hood and tam. Orders should be placed by April 6, 2018 to ensure on-time delivery.

Distribution of rental gowns will be on Thursday and Friday, May 17 and 18 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore.  If you will not be on campus until the weekend, they are also available Saturday, May 19  (8 a.m. - 9 p.m.) and Sunday, May 20 (7 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.)

Return your rental gown after the ceremony to the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore on Sunday, May 20 (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) or May 21 – 24 (8 a.m. – 9 p.m.).  Late fees will be assessed for gowns not returned by the Thursday, May 24, deadline.

Personalized Announcements

Balfour/CB Announcements is the official provider of University of Notre Dame announcements.  Representatives will be available at the Graduation Fair for personal assistance and ordering or go to CBgrad.com (you will need your student ID# to order).  Extra announcements may be ordered at any time.  One of the announcement options is a photograph of the graduate. A photographer will be on hand at the Graduation Fair to take photos of students in a professional portrait or in a cap and gown.

Latin Honors are not printed on announcements. Only University major, minors, concentration and degree may be printed on announcements.


Guest Tickets/RSVP

August 2017 and January 2018 graduates:

Please complete your Graduation Application and specify the number of guest tickets no later than Thursday, March 22, 2018. If any of your guests have a physical restriction and require special seating, please indicate this information in detail. You can return to the Graduation Application to adjust your guest tickets anytime before the March 22 deadline. Ticket numbers can also be adjusted at Ticket Distribution.

Commencement Mass - Tickets are not required for the University Commencement Mass on Saturday, May 19 in the Joyce Center – Purcell Pavilion; however, an RSVP is requested. Cap and gown are required. Seating will be at capacity and overflow will be moved to the North Dome of the Joyce Center.

University Commencement Ceremony - Guest tickets are required for the Sunday morning University Commencement Ceremony at Notre Dame Stadium. Tickets are unlimited but must be requested by March 22. The procession begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program begins at 10:00 a.m. Cap and gown are required.

University Commencement Ceremony guest tickets are provided to each graduate by the University, but may not be transferred for a consideration (including, but not limited to money, gifts, property).  Violation of this regulation may mean you will not be allowed to receive or retain any guest tickets. 

Closed circuit live broadcast of the ceremony will be available in DeBartolo Hall for those guests who would prefer not to sit outside in the Notre Dame Stadium.

Diploma Ceremonies - Tickets are not required and guests are unlimited for your Diploma Ceremony; however, an RSVP is requested through the Graduation Application.  Cap and gown is required.

Ticket Distribution

For the Sunday morning, University Commencement Ceremony guest and graduate tickets, you will need to present your student I.D. or other photo I.D.  Tickets will only be released to the graduates:

Location is the Duncan Student Center, Room W106, enter doors 13 or 14. Times are as follows:
Wednesday, May 16  (1-5pm)
Thursday, May 17  (10am-7pm)
Friday, May 18   (10am-5pm)    

If you are unable to attend these dates, you may also pick them up at the follow locations and times:

Saturday, May 19, 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Office of the Registrar – 300 Grace Hall
Sunday, May 20, 7:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. –  Stadium - Gates A & B

When ordering your guest tickets for the University Commencement Ceremony, we request that you be as exact as possible as to the number you need. Adjustments can be made when you pick-up your tickets.


Diploma Ceremonies

Degree candidates will receive their diplomas during their respective separate college/department/school ceremonies. As you already graduated, you will be provided with an empty diploma cover, so that as you walk across the stage, you are treated the same as the degree candidates who are just receiving their diplomas. Undergraduate ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 p.m., after the University Commencement Ceremony. Graduate and Professional students (Law, Graduate Business, Graduate School) will receive their diplomas during their Saturday ceremonies. Students will receive additional information from their college, school, or department regarding their respective ceremonies. Tickets are not required for individual diploma ceremonies; however, an RSVP is requested through the Graduation Application.


Diploma Name & Commencement Program Changes

As a previous graduate, you had the opportunity to change your name and hometown during your graduating semester.  The links below will provide another look at the name and hometown you chose for your diploma and/or Commencement program.

If you would like to change your hometown listing for the Commencement program, please use the Graduation Application. The deadline is Thursday, March 22.  August and January graduates have already received their diplomas.  For diploma name changes or replacement diploma requests, please visit the Diploma Information website.


Commencement Flowers and Graduation T-Shirts

Flowers and Graduation T-shirts with all the graduates’ names on the back will be available for purchase during Commencement Weekend from kiosks conveniently located around campus.

Inclusion of Name in University Commencement Program and Graduation T-shirt

May 2018 degree candidates,  August 2017 graduates, and January 2018 graduates will appear in the publicly-disseminated University Commencement Program. In addition, the names of all May 2018 degree candidates, August 2017 graduates, and January 2018 graduates will be included on the back of the Graduation T-shirts referenced above.

If you wish to exclude your name from the publicly-disseminated program and the Graduation T-shirt, you must provide the signed, written Request Form  to the Office of the Registrar no later than Wednesday, April 4, 2018.


Address Information

Graduates are encouraged to keep their home address information current with the University. To update your address, please email Alumni at alumfile@nd.edu.

If you anticipate receiving tax documents in February, 2019, please keep your address current with the Registrar by emailing Address.1@nd.edu.


Graduation Photographer

GradImages® is the official photographers and will be taking individual photos of each graduate at their diploma ceremonies.  Proofs will be emailed and/or mailed to the students along with information for ordering prints.
