May Degree Candidates' Information

The graduation action items listed below will be sent by email to May degree candidate students on Tuesday, March 6. Please do not respond or act on the action items until you receive the email. Please watch for the deadlines on many of the action items.

  • Purchase or rent your cap and gown

  • Have a graduation portrait taken in a cap and gown
  • Have your gown pressed for the big day

  • Learn how the Notre Dame family lives on after graduation
  • Guest with special needs? We will have information for you
  • Return those library books and check for unpaid fees
  • Visit Financial Aid representatives for information about your student loans
  • Visit the Office of the Registrar representatives


Booths from the Alumni Association, Career Center, and more will answer questions and provide crucial information. Vendors for regalia, class rings, photography, and others will also be on hand to ensure a successful graduation experience.  The Office of the Registrar staff will answer all of your graduation questions.

CAP AND GOWN

Undergraduate and Master Gowns

Purchase your cap and gown at the Graduation Fair on March 20 at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore from 9 a.m.  – 7 p.m.  Assistance will be available if you are unsure of your size.  You will be able to purchase and take your cap and gown with you on that day.

If you were not able to attend the Graduation Fair, you may order your regalia at NDcatalog.com. Orders must be placed by April 26.

After the ceremony – you can keep your cap and gown or donate it in recycling bins which will be located around campus.  Donated gowns will be recycled into furniture and carpet.

The tassel is yours to keep.  (Master degree candidates also keep hoods) 

 

Doctoral Rental Gowns

Order your rental cap and gown at the Graduation Fair on March 20 at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore from 9 a.m.  – 7 p.m.  Assistance will be available if you are unsure of your size.

If you were not able to attend the Graduation Fair, you may order your regalia at NDcatalog.com. Orders must be placed by April 26.

Distribution of rental gowns will be on Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore.  If you will not be on campus until the weekend, they are also available May 18  (8 a.m. - 9 p.m.) and May 19 (7 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.)

After the ceremony return your gown to the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore on Sunday, May 19 (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) or Monday, May 20 – Wednesday, May 22 (8 a.m. – 9 p.m.).

PERSONALIZED ANNOUNCEMENTS

Balfour is the official provider of University of Notre Dame announcements.  Representatives will be available at the Grad Fair for personal assistance and ordering or go to CBgrad.com.  Extra announcements may be ordered at any time from Balfour.  One of the announcement options is a photograph of the graduate. A photographer will be on hand at the Graduation Fair to take photos of  students in a cap and gown.

 

SENIOR SURVEY – (Undergraduate May degree candidate students only)

The Senior Survey is designed to help us determine if Notre Dame is keeping pace with your educational expectations.  You will receive an email from Institutional Research with the direct link to the Senior Survey. After you have completed the survey, you will be issued a passcode, which will be required to order your guest tickets.  You cannot order your University Commencement Ceremony guest tickets without completing the Senior Survey. 

 

GUEST TICKETS

If you intend to participate in the Sunday 9:00 a.m. University Commencement Ceremony and need guest tickets, please contact Rochelle Jones by email to order your tickets, as it is past the deadline to fill out the on-line form. Please let her know your survey passcode, the number of tickets you require, and if any of your guests has a physical restriction and requires special seating.

August 2012 and January 2013 graduates must order guest tickets through the pdf link provided on the August and January Action Items web page.

Commencement Mass

Tickets are not required for the University Commencement Mass on Saturday, May 18 in the Joyce Center – Purcell Pavilion.  Cap and gown is required.

University Commencement Ceremony

Guest tickets are required for the Sunday 9 a.m. University Commencement Ceremony at Notre Dame Stadium.  Graduates do not need a ticket.  Tickets are unlimited but must be requested by March 21.

Graduate Students – If you intend to participate in the Sunday 9:00 a.m. University Commencement Ceremony and need guest tickets, please contact Rochelle Jones by email to order your tickets, as it is past the deadline to fill out the on-line form. Please let her know the number of tickets you require and if any of your guests has a physical restriction and requires special seating.

University Commencement Ceremony guest tickets are provided to each graduate by the University, but may not be transferred for a consideration (including, but no tlimited to money, gifts, property).  Violation of this regulation may mean you will not be allowed to receive or retain any guest tickets. 

Closed circuit live broadcast of the ceremony will be available in DeBartolo Hall for those guests who would prefer not to sit outside in the Notre Dame Stadium.

Guest Ticket Pick-up

Sunday morning, University Commencement Ceremony guest tickets:

Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore:

Thursday, May 16 - 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Friday, May 17       - 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
 

You will need present your student I.D. or other photo I.D.  Tickets will only be released to the graduates. 

Please allow yourself time to complete the Future Plans survey at ticket distribution, which should take approximately ten minutes.

If you are unable to attend these dates, you may also pick them up at the follow locations and times:

Saturday, May 18, 8 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. – Office of the Registrar – 300 Grace Hall
Sunday, May 19, 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. – Ticket Window- west side of the Stadium

In ordering your guest tickets for the University Commencement Ceremony, we request that you be as exact as possible as to the number you need. Adjustments can be made when you pick-up your guest tickets.

 

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES

Students will receive their diplomas during their respective separate college/department/school ceremonies. Undergraduate ceremonies are scheduled for Sunday afternoon, May 19, after the University Commencement Ceremony. Graduate and Professional students (Law, Graduate Business, Graduate School) will receive their diplomas during their Saturday ceremonies on May 18. Students will receive additional information from their college, school, or department regarding their respective ceremonies.

 

GRADUATION PHOTOGRAPHER

Official photographers will be available for graduation portraits at the Grad Fair on March 21 to take photos of  students in a cap and gown. 
 

GradImages® will be the official photographers and will be taking individual photos of each graduate at their diploma ceremonies.  Proofs will be emailed and/or mailed to the students along with information for ordering prints.  Please visit their site to pre-register your contact information at www.gradimages.com or they can be reached at 800-261-2576.

 

DIPLOMA NAME & COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM CHANGES

Verify your degree, your name, and hometown as they should appear in the Commencement Program and your name as it will appear on your diploma. Please also verify your major(s) and/or minor(s); for accuracy (must be logged into insideND first). (If you are having difficulties logging into the page, please go through insideND, Student Academic Services tab/channel, Graduation Information, and click on May Degree Candidate Processes. This will redirect you back to this page with your single-sign-on.) If you need to change your graduation information, the request must be received by the Office of the Registrar, 300 Grace Hall, no later than Thursday, March 21, or a $75 diploma reorder fee will be assessed.   If there is no hometown listed, we will use the city, state, and nation of your current home address.
 

LATIN HONORS

Latin Honors are based on your last semester cumulative grade point average. Your diploma and the determination of receiving Latin Honors cords from your undergraduate dean's office is based on your final spring cumulative grade point average.  Due to printing deadlines, the printed Commencement Program will state your Latin Honors based on your fall semester grades. If your Latin Honors change between the fall and spring, you will be mailed an updated Commencement Program reflecting your corrected Latin Honors.

 

ADDRESS INFORMATION

Students are encouraged to keep their home address information current through graduation with the University. To check your current home address, log into InsideND, go to your “Student” tab, and then “Personal Information”. Any changes should be emailed to address.1@nd.edu. After graduation, all address changes for graduates should be reported to Alumni at alumfile@nd.edu.

 

FINANCIAL ACCOUNT

Your financial account needs to be settled in full prior to the graduation date. Questions regarding financial accounts should be directed to the Office of Student Accounts at (574) 631-7113. You may go to the Student Account Balance link through insideND to view your account.

If your financial account has not been settled, a notice will be inserted in your diploma cover in place of your diploma. Once you have settled your account, your diploma will be mailed to you.

 

FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS

Federal regulations require that all students who have borrowed from the Federal Loan programs receive exit loan counseling. Exit loan counseling provides details regarding a borrower’s rights and responsibilities for student loan repayment, deferment options, and loan consolidation benefits.


Please go to the Exit Loan Counseling Information Page to complete this graduation requirement.

 

HOLDS

To receive your diploma, all charges assessed to your financial account before Commencement weekend must be paid in full at the Office of Student Accounts, 116 Main Building.

You may go to the “View Holds” link through insideND to view any holds on your account.

 

IN ABSENTIA FORM

Please complete the In Absentia form to notify the Office of the Registrar that you will not be attending your diploma ceremony. You must complete and submit the In Absentia Request form no later than April 29 to the Office of the Registrar, 300 Grace Hall.  Current student who will not be attending their diploma ceremony, will especially want to fill out this form to supply the address to mail your diploma.
